Visit to Norway a milestone in furthering ties: Dr Firdous

ISLAMABAD, Sep 11 (APP): Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan arrived here on Sunday after completing three-day official visit to Norway where she received an award on behalf of Prime Minister, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani.The Bridge Builder Award 2011 has been conferred on the Prime Minister for his efforts to improve Pakistan’s relations with western countries and in recognition of his services for strengthening of democracy, promotion of human rights and his efforts for normalization of Indo-Pak relations.During her visit, Dr Firdous attended official meetings with Vice Chairman of Norwegian parliament Per Kristian Foss, Dy. Foreign Minister of Norway and Conservative party opposition leader in Norwegian Parliament Ms. Erna Solberg.

She also met with a high level business delegation of the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO) in order to promote mutual investment among the two countries.
She discussed matters of mutual interest pertaining to bilateral relations and also had a meeting with a representative group of businessmen from federation of chambers of commerce of Oslo.
The Minister also held meeting with Jon Fedrik Baksaas, President and Chief Executive Officer of Telenor Group to discuss the group’s future investment plans in Pakistan.
She briefed the dignitaries about the investment friendly incentives being given by the government to the foreign investors and emphasized that the losses suffered by Pakistani economy due to its role in war on terror demanded the international business community to invest liberally in Pakistan.
She also attended a colourful evening arranged by Pakistani community in Oslo, aimed at introducing Pakistani culture, music and fashion. The members of Pakistani community and the citizens of Oslo largely attended and appreciated the ceremony.    
During her stay, the Minister also visited the Norwegian Island of Utoya, the site of gun attack which claimed the lives of 69 people on July 22.
She offered condolences on behalf of the President, the Prime Minister and the people of Pakistan over the massacre and expressed her sympathies with the families and friends of those who lost their precious lives in the gory incident. She also visited the Embassy of Pakistan and met with community leaders.
Upon her early morning arrival at Islamabad International Airport, Dr. Firdous termed the visit as successful and said that Pakistan attaches special importance to its relations with Norway and desired to enhance trade ties with it.
She said the visit would help further cement the relationship in multi-faceted dimensions between Pakistan and Norway.
